BeaverTails (Ottawa) – Simple and tasty.

I read about Obama getting an “Obamatail” and decided to check out what this BeaverTail was. It was probably the most touristy thing I’ve ever done. I am somewhat ashamed. I am pretty sure that there are lots of other BeaverTail vendors in Ottawa but the one I went to was the easiest to find, right in the Byward Market. If a lineup is ever an indicator of quality, then certainly this was a safe bet. Lineups are rarely indicators of quality. Look at Cora’s Breakfast.

For $3.75, you get a large thin, hot piece of fried dough powdered in cinnamon and sugar. It is so tasty. Steaming. Crispy. Sweat. Tender. Satisfying. These are pretty addictive. It is light so you don’t feel too gross afterwards. They remind me of a Krispy Kreme and why those were so addictive. There are a lot of other flavours (Peaches and Cream, Reese’s Pieces, Strawberry Shortcake). I don’t think any of them can compare to the basic.

This is food in its purest simplest form. Flavour. Texture. Smell. Nothing more and nothing less.
